Digimon turns 25 this year and a lengthy stream from its creators over the weekend revealed some of what's planned to mark the occasion. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to write home about. However, the reveal that an upgraded version of Digimon's Digivices will return, and are already available to pre-order, saved the stream somewhat.
Yes, Digimon might have come after and taken a lot of inspiration from Pokemon, but before there was Pokemon Go, there was the Digivice. No, it wasn't close to being as advanced as Pokemon Go, but it came about more than 20 years earlier and didn't have the benefit of smartphone technology. The Digivice was effectively a Tamagotchi crossed with a pedometer. Walk around with the Digivice to raise your Digimon, encountering other digital monsters as you go.
Digimon's 25th anniversary Digivice has revived the device and made it a whole lot better. The biggest upgrade is the color screen, something that likely wasn't an option with the original Digivice. Trainers will have eight Digimon to choose from, based on the options in Digimon Adventure, and your choice will determine the color your Digivice's LEDs glow. The new Digivice works in much the same way as the old device. Walk around, raise your Digimon, find other wild Digimon, and even encounter the same boss Digimon featured in the series' original story.

Mentioned during Digimon's reveal was a USB-C connection to charge your Digivice, notes on cooperating with friends, sounds based on the Digimon you choose, and even 1 v 1 battles.
