Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Young Justice season 4, episode 25.
The Gandalf joke Nightwing made in the penultimate episode of Young Justice: Phantoms could explain how he might return following his apparent death. Young Justice is unique among superhero animated series, allowing death to be a real possibility, with no miraculous resurrections in the series to date. And yet there is a precedent in the comics for death only being the beginning of Dick Grayson's efforts to help others as a hero, hinting he might come back as Gandalf did in The Lord of the Rings.
The action of Young Justice season 4 episode 25, «Over and Out,» found Nightwing leading a group of heroes in a Battle of Thermopylae scenario like in Zack Snyder's 300, guarding a portal out of the Phantom Zone as the armies of General Zod sought to escape the interdimensional prison plane. As the Kryptonian criminals charged the exit, Nightwing planted himself between them and the small portal, declaring, in imitation of Gandalf the Grey from Lord of the Rings, "You shall not pass!" Ever the quipster, even with the world's fate at stake, he then told his teammates that he had always wanted to say that.

While his allies held the pass, Nightwing ran through the portal and emerged out the other side in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, discovering that General Zod and Ursa had begun using the solar chambers Superman used for healing severe injuries to speed the development of their powers under Earth's yellow sun. Nightwing attempted to blow up the chambers but was quickly subdued after General Zod's son, Lor-Zod, collapsed the statue of Superman's parents on top of Nightwing. The
