However, fans of the franchise are adamant about wanting Depp’s Jack Sparrow back and have shown little interest in the alternatives that the producers of the series proposed. Although a potential spinoff starring Margot Robbie was announced in 2o20, this Pirates of the Caribbean project failed to ignite much interest in the franchise’s fandom. For many, Depp’s Sparrow is the center of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and thus the sixth movie without him is of no interest.

Further proof of this problem for producers came about in February 2022, when a Change.org petition demanding that Depp be brought back as the star of the series reached a massive 700,000 signatures. Although Pirates of the Caribbean 6 can bring back other characters, none of these supporting stars hold as much sway over much of the franchise's audience as Depp’s Sparrow. The 700,000-strong petition serves as further proof that many viewers of the Pirates of the Caribbean series have not forgotten about Depp’s apparent departure from the series, and this does not bode well for the franchise’s producers.
