WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Deep Water!
Deep Water’s drama takes a turn once Vic Van Allen is shown murdering Melinda’s lovers, but how many of them did he actually kill? The core conflict for Deep Water’s erotic psychological thriller begins when Ben Affleck’s character, Van Allen, tries to scare off Melinda’s paramour, Joel, by telling him that he killed Martin McCrae, who was also one of his wife’s “friends.” While this seemingly begins as a joke intended for Vic to keep Melinda’s lovers at bay, the couple’s growing mind games eventually end in the deaths of several men.
Once Vic tells Joel that he killed the missing Martin McCrae, the news spreads around Deep Water’s town like a wildfire, though all but one character believes Vic when he says it was a joke. While Melinda gets angry with Vic for the joke, new neighbor Don (Tracy Letts) suspects that Vic’s lie has a layer of truth hidden beneath it. After moving past the McCrae fiasco, another tragedy strikes: Melinda’s new lover Charlie (Jacob Elordi) is found dead by Deep Water's characters in a swimming pool. After this moment, Vic’s rage can no longer be tamed, with anyone involving themself in his marriage soon facing dire consequences.

Also, Vic hadn’t quite committed himself to murdering the lovers
