Hulu’s Deep Water features a variety of new and classic songs on its soundtrack that supports the psychological thriller’s high-stakes mind games. Starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas as married couple Vic and Melinda Van Allen, Deep Water is the first film directed by Adrian Lyne in 20 years, who is arguably best known for his 1987 erotic psychological thriller Fatal Attraction. In telling the twisted romance of Deep Water’s main characters, Lyne primarily uses modern songs to underscore their conflicts.
Since Deep Water includes multiple parties and Ana de Armas’ character having an affair with a piano player, it’s not surprising that the thriller’s first act features so much music. Adrian Lyne is also particularly notable for his films’ soundtracks, with the best example being the 1983 romantic drama Flashdance. Since then, Lyne has incorporated many modern songs into his films like 2022’sDeep Water that increase the tension of his thrillers, even if they may seem like odd choices. For instance, Deep Water repeatedly plays “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” for Vic and Melinda’s daughter as a way to get on the nerves of Ana de Armas’ frustrated character.
