Whether Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s protagonist is Goku or Gohan, Piccolo may turn out to be equally as important to the story. Similar to the situation with other Z-Warriors, Piccolo became significantly less relevant to the Dragon Ball anime the longer it continued. However, the gains he made toward the end of Dragon Ball Super and his performance in the Tournament of Power are indicators of a possible shift for his character.
Marketing for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has confirmed that Piccolo will have a substantial presence. Trailers have made it clear that both he and Gohan will be going up against Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, the new android creations of the Red Ribbon Army. As for Goku, his reputation as the main hero of the anime initially led to the assumption that he’d be filling the same role in the new movie. However, the second trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and other details have created the impression that the franchise is taking a break from the standard formula by letting Gohan take the spotlight this time.

The fan debate over which of the two characters Super Hero’s story is focused on ignores a major third party – Piccolo. Everything known about the story points to both Gohan and Piccolo being more important to the story than Goku. Earlier, Toei Animation explained that the movie would debut Piccolo’s home. The fact that this is the first time it’ll ever be shown on screen speaks volumes about how much Super Hero is elevating his character. Also, Piccolo will be training Pan, and it’s presumed that he’ll continue mentoring Gohan as well. Of course, all of this is in addition to him fighting the androids with Gohan.
