Nicolas Cage has responded to the criticism given to Marvel films by well-known filmmakers. Cage is an actor who is known for taking roles in what seems to be nearly every film offered to him. Over the course of his career, he has appeared in so many different films of varying genres and qualities, that it's nearly impossible to nail down the actor's brand. In fact, in Cage's upcoming movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the actor plays a cash-strapped version of himself who gets paid to make an appearance at a billionaire super-fan's birthday party which quickly goes downhill. Naturally, with a career as wide-ranging as Cage's, he has also appeared in a superhero movie or two. Cage's most notable superhero appearance was in 2007's Ghost Rider and its sequel.
With the massive success of the MCU and the DCEU as well as the many Marvel and DC films that take place outside of their respective universes, superhero movies are among the most successful and bankable projects for studios to produce. Despite their massive fanbase, they are not immune to criticism. Many legendary filmmakers have come forward to express their distaste for the genre. Both Francis Ford Coppola (who happens to be Cage's uncle) and Martin Scorsese have expressed how they find the modern superhero film to be more akin to a theme park ride than actual cinema. Independence Day director Roland Emmerich has also spoken negatively about the genre, expressing how it is almost impossible for a filmmaker to get a project greenlit these days if it is not a sequel to a superhero film.
