AEW fans have been hoping to see Claudio Castagnoli debut since he and WWE failed to come to terms on a new contract in late February. Earlier this summer, reports surfaced indicating that the former Cesaro would head back to WWE due to his familiarity with the company, but that never materialized. He waited for the right time and the right opportunity, and replacing an injured Bryan Danielson at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view was that perfect spot.

On the go-home edition of Dynamite, however, Danielson revealed that he hadn't been medically cleared to wrestle Sabre Jr. and that he'd found a suitable replacement. The internet swirled with speculation following that announcement, with most fans agreeing that either Castagnoli or Johnny Gargano would fill in for Danielson. Tony Khan seemed to tip his hand about the mystery wrestler being Castagnoli during his media availability ahead of Forbidden Door, and that turned out to be what went down on the show.
