Classic Elder Scrolls Title Gets Free Remake

The Elder Scrolls franchise has developed significantly since its first title back in 1994 with The Elder Scrolls: Arena. While all the games have kept the open-world RPG core of The Elder Scrolls, there have been significant shifts in the franchise's entries to match the improvements in gaming technology. With Morrowind recently having celebrated its 20th anniversary, it is clear to see the difference between it and a newer game like Skyrim, for example. However, for many Elder Scrolls fans, these classic titles can still hold up to modern games, especially in the stories and lore they provide.

In terms of gameplay, the older Elder Scrolls games can certainly show their age at times, especially those that are over 20 years old like Morrowind and Daggerfall. This has led some committed Elder Scrolls fans to recreate their favorite RPGs from the franchise in order to make them playable again. Enter Daggerfall Unity, a remake of the 1996 game that keeps the nostalgic aesthetic of the original, while updating its graphics, sound, and more to get the title running on newer machines.

Daggerfall Unity contains other upgrades to the original Daggerfall as well, such as allowing for mod support in the game and fixing the mass of bugs that the initial 1996 title launched with. However, when it first released, Daggerfall Unity could prove to be rather difficult to set up, leading some fans to abandon the remake in favor of other faithful recreations like Skygerfall, a Daggerfall recreation made entirely in Skyrim.

Now, well-known online games store GOG.com is releasing its own free version of Daggerfall Unity that doesn't require any of the finicky setup.
