Chris Hemsworth shared an image from a particularly strenuous Extraction 2 workout on his Instagram. The film is an impending sequel to his 2020 action film Extraction, which premiered on Netflix in April of 2020. In the original film, Hemswroth played Tyler Rake, a mercenary hired to rescue the son of an international crime lord. Extraction captured an early pandemic audience who were starved for content during widespread theater shutdowns, rising to become the second-highest watched Netflix film ever, before being knocked back to third by the rise of the star-studded Red Notice last year.
With those kinds of numbers, it was inevitable that Extraction would get a sequel, even though Tyler Rake's fate was left somewhat in question by the film's ambiguous ending. But at Netflix's global fan event TUDUM, which took place in September 2021, it was confirmed that Hemsworth would be returning for Extraction 2 and that Rake did indeed survive the events of the first film. The project is now filming with returning director Sam Hargrave at the helm, working once again from a script by Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo, who co-wrote the original graphic novel Ciudad with his brother Anthony, Ande Parks, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. Hemsworth confirmed filming for Extraction 2 was underway in December 2021 by way of a behind-the-scenes set video.
