Marvel Studios' Eternals is finally available to stream on Disney Plus, and so are many of the behind-the-scenes commentaries for the film. In one, director Chloé Zhao talks about the film's post-credits scene that features Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, believing that scene sets up a lot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While both of Eternals' end-credits scene arguably set up a lot, as the first one introduces Starfox / Eros (Harry Styles) and Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt), Zhao believes Whitman discovering the Ebony Blade in the final end-credits scene is the one for fans to keep their eyes on. In that post-credits scene, Whitman is in his classroom at the university, where he opens an old chest inherited from his ancestors that contains a valuable family antique: the Ebony Blade.

After Sersi has been taken to face the judgment of the Celestials for ultimately deciding to kill the newborn celestial, Tiamut, while also ending the emergence on Earth, Whitman considers taking up the blade in order to save her himself, which teases the beginning of his transformation into the Black Knight. But what gets even more interesting is that while Whitman is staring at the blade and contemplating his decision, he hears a voice off-screen asking him if he is ready to harness the legendary sword, a voice that belongs to none other than Mahershala Ali's Blade. «The Ebony Blade, who would have thought. I definitely geek out quite a bit, especially when the voice that comes in the end,» Zhao said to Eternals' VFX supervisors on the audio commentary track. «Sets up so much… And, I love this effect they use on the sword so much.»
