Hulu’s Candy follows the gruesome true story of the murder of Betty Gore, but little is said about what happened to Betty Gore’s husband, Allan, after Candy Montgomery’s trial. Taken mainly from Candy Montgomery’s own testimony, Candy is largely told from her point of view, with the five-night Hulu event following her life before, during, and after the murder. Starring The Sinner’s Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery, Hulu’s Candy spends much of its first episodes jumping back and forth through time between just after the murder and everything that led up to it. The series shows Candy strike up a friendship with Betty, however, viewers are left to wonder about the authenticity of the friendship as Candy is popular, fun, and largely ill-matched for the awkward and strict Betty. Furthering the idea that there was an ulterior motive behind the friendship, Candy was having an affair with Betty’s husband, Allan, and the friendship might have been an attempt to assuage her guilt. The affair lasted several months and, though it was Allan who ended the affair, Candy later claimed the conclusion of the relationship was mutual. Allan wanted to reinvest in his marriage to Betty (played by Yellowjacket’s Melanie Lynskey) and Candy was dissatisfied with the sex.
