The iPhone's Safari browser has gone through some big updates in the recent past and the position of the search bar is one of the most controversial visual changes that Apple made. Websites can be opened from links that appear when opening a new tab or from bookmarks, but the search bar is a critical part of the user interface since this is where a search begins and where a direct website address can be typed in. Knowing how to move it can be a nice improvement in convenience and affects the look of the browser.
Apple developed the Safari browser for its Mac computer and ported it to the iPhone in 2007, bringing a fair portion of the power of a desktop browser to the iPhone. In fact, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs initially intended for all iPhone apps to be web apps. That's how confident Apple was that Safari was an excellent browser for the iPhone. Naturally, developers wanted more direct access to the hardware and Apple introduced the App Store in 2008.

The iPhone's Safari browser does have a movable search bar, but the controls that allow movement are not accessed via the browser. Instead, Apple tucked them away in the Settings app under the Safari tab. The Tab Bar option in the Tabs section places the search bar at the bottom of the screen, which is a bit unusual but more convenient for one-handed use. The Single Tab option uses themore common placement at the top of the screen. There is also an option just below that's labeled Landscape Tab Bar and this enables the tab bar to appear just below the search bar, which is always placed at the top when holding the iPhone sideways, unless orientation is locked.
