Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a hit TV show on The WB, it was a movie with different actors playing some of the most iconic characters known in pop culture — here are the three movie roles to be recast for the Buffy series. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons (and switched networks) before being canceled in 2003. It remains to this day one of the most influential sci-fi series in TV history. However, the show could have looked a lot different had it kept some of the movie's cast members.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was originally a 1992 movie written by Joss Whedon and directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui. To be sure, the film wasn’t as dark or gritty as the show that would follow. Rather, the Buffy movie was more of a comedy horror that centered the titular character — who was a shop-loving cheerleader in this iteration — and her origins as a vampire slayer. When the movie was turned into a TV show five years later, Whedon scrapped most of the film’s characters, including Buffy’s friends (one of whom was played by Hilary Swank) and boyfriend.

While the premise essentially remained the same, there were stark differences between the two. Heading in an entirely new direction, 1997’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer changed its tone and introduced a host of characters who took on a life of their own, separate from the original film. However, there were three characters who, rather than being changed — like Buffy, who remained the central focus of the story — were simply recast for Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s TV adaptation.
