Do you miss the good ol’ days of the PS1? Blocky graphics? Stylish fog used to hide terrible render distances? No analogue stick? That last one is more annoying than nostalgic, but you get the picture. Bloodborne PSX is a PS1 demake of the PS4 modern-classic, and it’s in this week’s Indie Spotlight.
Made by b0tster, this gritty, CRT-looking game isn’t just a fancy texture pack - it’s a complete ground-up demake of the original. You can download it here and play for yourself if you dare, but be warned, even seasoned Bloodborne veterans will find themselves lost and dying a lot in this new old version.

This demake makes complete thematic sense, as FromSoftware actually has a long history with PlayStation, cutting their teeth on the King’s Field series for the PS1. Yep, despite what many may think, the company existed before Demon’s Souls.
The opening cutscenes and character creator look incredible. The art style truly invokes old horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. It suits the gothic tone of Bloodborne perfectly. The downside is a lot of the stunning vistas Bloodborne is known for have to be obscured, but it makes them all the more exciting when you get to a ledge and are able to peek at the towering cathedrals and bridges in Yharnam.
The game is entirely playable with just a keyboard, no mouse use at all. It takes a few minutes to get used to the new layout and the strange inability to look up, but it works. After all, games from this era often had strange control schemes and lots of random limitations. I woke up in Iosefka’s Clinic, tangled with the werewolf, and promptly got my guts ripped out. I’ve lost my touch.
