Have you recently invested on a Snapdragon 888-powered phone lately, i.e., the likes of Xiaomi 11T Pro, OnePlus 9RT, and last year's Android flagships? There's some sad news for you. Based on a leaked AnTuTu score, it seems that Qualcomm's mighty Snapdragon 888 has been bested by MediaTek's Dimensity 8000 chip. The Dimensity 8000 is currently the second most powerful smartphone chip MediaTek makes after the 4nm Dimensity 9000 chip, which is said to take on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip this year.
Tipster Digital Chat Station has shared some AnTuTu scores for the MediaTek Dimensity 8000 chip. And from what we see, this is far from any midrange chip. The Dimensity 8000 has scored 820,000 on AnTuTu v9, which is comparatively higher than most Snapdragon 888 flagships from last year. This is surprising, given that the Dimensity 8000 is said to not have the 1+3+4 core configuration, like the SD 888.
That said, the tipster says that with the Dimensity 8000, MediaTek is not trageting the Snapdragon 888 at all. Instead, it is going after the older Snapdragon 870 chip. Last year's Dimensity 1200 put up a good fight against the Snapdragon 870 but mostly lost out to it when it came to benchmarks.
For the Snapdragon 888, MediaTek is said to be working on a Dimensity 8100 chip. This is said to be based on the same architecture but with increased CPU speeds. MediaTek is yet to confirm the same but leaks suggest the revelation could happen sometime in March. Other rumours suggest that this Dimensity 8000 won't be any different to the 8100. We will have to wait and see for MediaTek to make an announcement.
A chip of this capacity could enable several “flagship killer” devices in the market, a segment which relied mostly on the Dimensity 1200
