While fans wait for the next Mortal Kombat or Injustice, Ed Boon’s cryptic comments could mean NetherRealm’s next game is something else.
Thanks to the uncertainty caused by Warner Bros. Games being broken up, it’s been speculated that NetherRealm will jump to Mortal Kombat 12 next instead of making Injustice 3.
While there remains no official announcement, a recent interview with Ed Boon, creative director on both Mortal Kombat and Injustice, seems to have confirmed that the studio’s usual release pattern has been broken.
When asked about what’s next for NetherRealm by Game Informer, Boon responded with: ‘I can say that for 10 years, we were releasing Mortal Kombat and Injustice, Mortal Kombat and Injustice. When we broke that pattern, there was a lot of speculation of what we would be doing next.
‘I can tell you there was a reason for it, and when we announce our next game, it’ll make a lot more sense. At this point, I’ll get in a lot of trouble if I say anything more.’
Since NetherRealm’s last release was Mortal Kombat 11, the automatic assumption was that Injustice 3 would follow. However, if the release pattern has been broken, then this lends credence to Mortal Kombat 12 being next instead.
Or perhaps NetherRealm is working on something completely different? There were rumours of the studio making a Marvel fighting game last year, but so far nothing has come of it. It’s also hard to believe considering Disney owns Marvel and likely wouldn’t want to lend it to one of its main business competitors.
