Heroes of the Storm is a dead MOBA walking.
Blizzard Entertainment has announced(Opens in a new window) that its answer to League of Legends and Dota 2 won't receive any content updates in the future. Instead, the company says that "future patches will primarily focus on client sustainability and bug fixing, with balance updates coming as needed."
The news page(Opens in a new window) for Heroes of the Storm indicates that the last content-focused patch Blizzard deemed worthy of a blog post was pushed in May 2021; it last released a balance-focused patch in September 2021. It hasn't published a blog post about the game in the last 10 months.
Blizzard says it will continue to maintain Heroes of the Storm, however, and will keep selling in-game items. (Even though it says "there are no plans for new for-purchase content to be added," which means the game's remaining players will see the same items over and over again.)
The company says it plans to release a patch next week, and will be "gifting the incredibly rare Epic Arcane Lizard mount to all players" in the process. It's not clear how often Heroes of the Storm will receive updates after Blizzard offers this final "token of [its] appreciation."
"To our Heroes community, we say, thank you'," Blizzard says. "You continue to be one of our most passionate communities, we’re grateful for your continued dedication and support, and as always, we look forward to seeing you in the Nexus."
