AMC recently announced that Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, the central characters of Breaking Bad, will appear in the spin-off series Better Call Saul season 6, but this is a concerning choice. Incorporating Walt and Jesse has been presented as a fan-pleasing moment but could disrupt the narratives of both shows. While Better Call Saul's writers have earned the benefit of the doubt, these guest appearances are a bad idea that go against the series' strengths.
Walt and Jesse will be far from the first Breaking Bad characters to appear in Better Call Saul, which takes place prior to the landmark drama. In addition to Saul Goodman, known at first as Jimmy McGill, and Mike Ermentraut serving as main cast members, the prequel has included Hank Schrader, Tuco, Hector Salamanca, Gus Fring, and numerous other characters in roles of various sizes. Walt and Jesse appearing in Better Call Saul season 6 is the culmination of this trend. But these continuous references to Breaking Bad are often the show's weakest points, and Walter and Jesse seem especially ill-suited to a role in the prequel timeline.
