Similar to a revered episode in Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul's mid-season finale focuses on a plan that succeeds only to be undercut by a tragic death. Jimmy and Kim's scheme in Better Call Saul begins perfectly. Through meticulous planning, they manage to erode Howard's credibility bit by bit, especially in the eyes of his partner Cliff Main. Yet, their plan looks set to burn when Better Call Saul's Jimmy sees Judge Casimiro, the man they attempt to discredit through forged pictures, who has a broken arm and a cast. Ultimately, through unrelenting will, their plan succeeds without a hitch—however, not without consequences.
From the beginning, their scheme to destroy Howard Hamlin's career and legacy isn't propelled by reasonable motives. As Howard tells them, they did it «for fun,» yet their commitment to seeing it to its conclusion results in Kim truly choosing the bad choice road and breaking bad, while Jimmy becomes the ill-reputable character of Saul Goodman. These consequences are not the worst, however, as Lalo Salamanca appears from the grave only to put Howard there in his place.

Howard's death in Better Call Saul is a cruel twist of fate, which from the beginning seems totally unavoidable considering that Jimmy and Kim's scheme is unnecessary. What makes it even more tragic, however, is how it mirrors and flips Drew's death in Breaking Bad season 5.
