Benedict Cumberbatch Was Surprised By Doctor Strange's Role In The MCU
Benedict Cumberbatch opens up about how Doctor Strange's MCU role has evolved in ways that surprised him. MCU's primary sorcerer is fresh from his second solo-film in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Sam Raimi-directed flick sets up an interesting future for Doctor Strange as he continues his journey in the franchise.
The sorcerer was a rather late addition to the MCU, only debuting in 2017's Doctor Strange movie from director Scott Derrickson. His origins story take place in 2016, after Iron Man and Captain America's fallout in Captain America: Civil War. It took six long years before he got his second solo adventure, although he was instrumental in the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. This gained him prominence in the overall MCU, and made Doctor Strange's Spider-Man: No Way Home appearance plausible.

Now, as he moves forward with the next chapter for his character, Cumberbatch looks back at how Strange's personal story has evolved over the years. In an interview with New Indian Express, he admits he is surprised at how prominent Doctor Strange has become in the MCU. While he was aware of how great his character is, he didn't know how Marvel Studios was planning to develop the sorcerer. Read Cumberbatch's full answer below:
Not really. I’m still surprised at how prominent he has become. I always knew there was amazing potential there because of all the aspects to the character, but I definitely had no idea that we would get to be at this point with the multiverse aspect when we started out.
