Marvel had a much better connection between Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home than it used. Before his solo outing in the Sam Raimi-directed flick, Benedict Cumberbatch's sorcerer appeared in Tom Holland's third solo Spider-Man film. Doctor Strange's involvement in Peter Parker's latest standalone adventure was meant to be the launching pad for his own mission in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but that transition wasn't done as well as might have been expected.
Doctor Strange's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the first few details confirmed for the threequel. Alongside it was the announcement that the Jon Watts-directed blockbuster was going to directly tie to the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Considering Spider-Man: No Way Home's multiversal story, it made sense that it's linked to Stephen Strange's second solo film. There was an assumption that Doctor Strange's spell to help Peter Parker was going to be the inciting incident that would put him in trouble with the Illuminati. That wasn't the case. In fact, there was barely any narrative connection between the films.

Interestingly, Marvel Studios may have originally been planning to more explicitly tie the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Artist Sean Hargreaves shared a concept artwork he created for Spider-Man: No Way Home showing Spider-Man isiting a visibly sick Doctor Strange in the Sanctum Sanctorum room. The whole set-up is aesthetically similar to the opening shot of Doctor Strange waking up from his ”nightmare” in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of
