Olly Sholotan, who plays Carlton Banks on Bel-Air, jokingly apologized for his character's new, friendly attitude to his cousin Will Smith (Jabari Banks). The freshman Peacock series and reboot of the classic '90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been lauded for its casting, tone and modern updates to stand on its own. Sholotan's Carlton has been singled out as one of the show's most significant differences, causing him to «assure» fans that his antagonistic persona will remain prominent this season.
With understandable hesitation towards a reimagining of the original series, Bel-Air has been praised for adding real stakes and drama to the show's core premise and updating the characters, especially Carlton. The seventh episode of season 1, «Payback's a „B*tch“, sees Will and Carlton getting along after the latter is alienated by his own friends, so the former throws a party at their glorious Bel-Air mansion to regain Carlton's popularity. The majority of the episode sees a welcomed softer side of Carlton and his attitude towards Will, but the ending teases the renewal of the cousins' feud.

On the day of the episode's release on Peacock, Sholotan addressed in a two-part „apology“ tweet. „It has come to my attention that in the new episode,“ he wrote, „Peacock used takes where I was smiling at Will and NOT plotting his downfall or being a hater.“ Sholotan went on to say he was „furious“ at the oversight and added that Carlton will be back to his old Will-hating self soon.
