The most infamously bad Batman movie is not something that one would expect to be referenced in the highly successful Batman: Arkham Asylum. However, the game managed to subtly slip in an easily missed reference to the film. If nothing else, the team behind the game was definitely not afraid to poke fun at Batman's past.
Batman & Robin was a 1997 film that achieved infamy for being one of the most critically savaged superhero films in memory. Criticized for odd casting choices, a lackluster plot, and generally being far too goofy for a Batman film, Batman & Robinwas quickly considered a failure. When it was referenced by DC, it was almost always in a negative light, showing that they too hold a dim view of the film. Even over two decades later, it is still considered by many to be the worst Batman film. Besides, Arkham Asylum is more like Die Hard, than Batman & Robin, making Arkham Asylum's shout-out to the film even more mysterious.

The reference itself is one that the player must keep a sharp eye out for. In one of the game's scenes, Batman must save Cash and Dr. Kellerman from a room that is filling with Joker gas. Was Batman has ensured that both of them are safe, he can look back to the room where they had just been trapped to see a ticker flashing a unique message: "Dr. Clooney report to Gynecology." Whether this is the result of Joker tampering with the system or a legitimate message, it holds a reference that would only be understood by those who know of the infamous movie. Finding the message could even be a fun diversion for Arkham Asylum players who already beat the game.
