Yesterday, New Regency Entertainment and Diversion3 Entertainment announced (via Variety) that a video game adaptation of 2022's hit horror movie Barbarian is in development for PC and consoles.
Barbarian was written and directed by Zach Cregger as his debut film. Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long, the movie sees protagonist Tess reaching a rental house the evening before a job interview. Once she gets there, though, she finds out someone else has also rented the same house. With other nearby accommodations all booked up due to a local event, Tess decides to stay, not knowing the house harbors a dark secret. The movie was a major success among critics and at the box office, too, where it grossed ten times its budget.
Diversion3 Entertainment has previously worked on two asymmetrical survival horror games: IllFonic's Friday the 13th: The Game and Saber Interactive's Evil Dead: The Game. This could be a hint to the type of game that will be developed for this adaptation.
Tim Hesse, executive producer of Diversion3 Entertainment, said in a statement:
We’re very excited to work with the team at New Regency to expand on the settings, characters, and creatures of Barbarian. The film did a magnificent job of not only scaring audiences with its unexpected and horrifying twists and turns, but also in establishing strong characters thrown into terrifying situations. We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game.
Yariv Milchan, chairman and CEO of New Regency Pictures, said:
Expanding the ‘Barbarian’ universe into gaming provides a new way to capture the horror that made the film such a success. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the incredibly talented team at Diversion3 Entertainment to
