Larian Studios is already thinking about its future, as CEO Swen Vincke teases its "next big game". He isn't saying much about it just yet, but he does reveal that Baldur's Gate 3's success is encouraging the team to "push many boundaries", possibly meaning we have another huge RPG on our hands.
Vincke's comments come after Baldur's Gate 3 scoops up eight nominations at The Game Awards, putting it in joint first alongside Alan Wake 2. It also comes after the game's runaway success at the Golden Joystick Awards, winning Ultimate Game of the Year, Best Storytelling, and more.
"This is a real honor," says Vincke, responding to all of Baldur's Gate 3's latest nominations. "I wish I could tell you about our next big game but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries. I’m very excited about it."
Given Baldur's Gate 3's lengthy development cycle - that isn't really over now that it's receiving post-launch support - it's surprising to hear that Larian is already thinking ahead to its next project. There's no telling what this could be, whether it's another Baldur's Gate game, a new Divinity: Original Sin instalment, or another IP entirely.
Larian first expressed its interest in making a Baldur's Gate game in 2014. It only got permission to start work on Baldur's Gate 3 in 2017.
If we did get another Baldur's Gate instalment, we probably shouldn't expect it to carry on from the third game. After all, we can all end up with wildly different endings, so how could it be a direct sequel? The first two games centred around a different protagonist entirely, so it would make sense for a hypothetical Baldur's Gate 4 to give us a new main character once more.
