Fans are given a glimpse at the live-action Gaang cast in a behind-the-scenes look at Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Netflix’s adaptation is one of several Avatar: The Last Airbender-related projects that are in development this year, but it is the only live-action. With some additions and changes, showrunner Albert Kim hopes to reimagine the hit 2005 cartoon created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as a live-action show with the same charm the original had.
Kim is far from alone in his live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender journey, as the series reportedly brings together a humongous cast. Costume designer Farnaz Khaki-Sadigh shared a post on her Instagram that revealed Netflix has cast over 130 actors, not including extras or stunt performers for the series. At the front and center of this cast is Gordon Cormier as Aang, who is joined in his quest to find bending masters by Ian Ousley and Kiawentiio as Sokka and Katara, respectively. As the story unfolds they encounter Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Several other actors have been added to the cast without officially announced roles, including A Martinez and Amber Midthunder.
