The first trailer for Avatar 2: The Way of Water premiered before showings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now it's been published online for all to see. The trailer sets up the story and world of the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 film, and it looks spectacular.
The Way of Water is set more than a decade after Avatar, and it tells the story of the Sully family, which consists of Jake, Neytiri, and their kids. They are in trouble, and the movie focuses on their struggles to stay alive amid many tragedies around them.
James Cameron returns to direct the sequel, while the main cast is back as well, including Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. Also returning are Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Joel David Moore. Newcomers for the sequel include Edie Falco and Kate Winslet, among others.
Avatar: The Way of Water releases in theaters on December 16, 2022. The original movie is returning to cinemas on September 23. The 2009 film is the highest-grossing movie in history, bringing in $2.847 billion, just ahead of Avengers: Endgame's $2.797 billion.
In addition to Avatar 2, Ubisoft is releasing its new Avatar video game, Frontiers of Pandora, later this year. It's in the works from the developers of The Division.
