In retro news, I'm celebrating the 30th anniversary of the piggybacking oddity that was Sonic & Knuckles for Mega Drive. Dubbed "lock-on technology" by Sega, the general idea was to pop the top on this adapter and slap on either a Sonic 3 or Sonic 2 cartridge to inject a playable Knuckles the Echidna in. With Sonic 2, that meant ol' mate punchy could be used to wall-climb and inexplicably glide in the usual level layouts.
In Sonic 3, however, the changes were more profound (think: tweaked level routes, a new "Super Emerald" collection layer, and the chance to unlock Hyper Sonic/Knuckles/Tails with a True Ending). Basically, it was proto DLC that I recall thinking was "heaps rad."
