Warning: Spoilers for Atlanta season 3, episode 4, «The Big Payback.»
Donald Glover's FX series, Atlanta, has been no stranger to pushing the boundaries with its social commentary, but its latest episode about reparations was ridiculous and essential for viewers. Atlanta season 3, episode 4, «The Big Payback» laid the foundation with a court case involving an African American suing Marshall, an early investor of Tesla. The accusation was that the white investor only had the money to invest due to the enslavement of the claimant's ancestors. The trial's result gave precedence for other Black people of African descent to seek reparations for slavery.
It may be the case that Donald Glover is private with his personal life, but his show has no issue shining a light on controversial topics. The definition of reparations essentially means to make amends for a wrong committed. That can include paying money or helping those who have been wronged. The United States has given reparations to Native Americans, Japanese Americans, and even Holocaust survivors via benefits, programs, or monetary payments. However, despite state-sanctioned policies (slavery, Jim Crow laws, the GI Bill, redlining, and more), African Americans are the only group in America not to receive any reparations. As a result, white Americans freely built up generational wealth at the expense of Black Americans. Atlanta season 3 took a long time to make, but it wasted no time focusing on using absurd situations to address reparations.
