Many have wondered if Elon Musk buying Twitter would allow Donald Trump to return to the platform, but it doesn't matter what happens now, because Trump is not coming back.
Speaking with Fox News yesterday ahead of Musk's Twitter deal being agreed, Trump confirmed he wouldn't return to Twitter even if asked. "I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH," he said, "I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH."
Trump doesn't think a Twitter owned by Musk is competition for Truth Social, telling Fox that, "I think it is good. We want liberty and justice and fairness in our country, and the more we can have open, the better ... But no, I don’t view that as a competition for what I am doing."
Truth Social was expected to launch in February, but that got pushed back to March. Trump has yet to start using the platform, but told Fox he intends to start "TRUTHing" within a week. According to Trump, Truth Social already has "millions of people" and intends to avoid bots and fake accounts, although hasn't explained how. For now, it remains a US-only service accessible via an iOS app.
Donald Trump was permanently suspended from Twitter on Jan. 8, 2021, while he was still President, due to "the risk of further incitement of violence" following the attack on the US Capitol. The messages posted on his Twitter account preceding the ban included a video in which he lied about winning the 2020 election. The suspension was followed several months later by Trump filing a lawsuit against Twitter seeking to restore access to his account, which was still active as of February, but on very thin ice.
