While fans of Hulk and the Thing will always have strong arguments for why their hero should win a fight between the two, it turns out their co-creator Stan Lee had a very definitive answer — one he wasn't shy about sharing.
Lee created the characters alongside legendary collaborator Jack Kirby, making them some of the first heroes to make up the modern idea of the Marvel Universe. The two first met in Fantastic Four #12, beginning a rivalry that has endured ever since. In many ways the two are actually opposites, with Hulk engaged in an endless quest to be rid of the society that fears him, and the Thing having dedicated his life to reclaiming his humanity as one of Earth's greatest heroes. Each was granted super strength and enhanced durability by experiments gone wrong, but according to Lee, that doesn't make them equal.

Lee has actually opined on the winner of a Hulk vs Thing fight many times, as well as writing several clashes over their comics history. Like many comic creators, Lee was cagey about any 'who would win in a fight' questions, explaining that the victor will always be whoever the writer wants to win, since they'll find a way for them to do so. However, Lee had a much more definitive answer when it came to Marvel's two main powerhouses. In an interview with The Tomorrow Show subsequently reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Lee stated:
Oh, the Hulk would win. The Thing is faster and smarter, so he would probably find a way to turn it into a draw or save himself. He’d trap or trick the Hulk. But, in a fair fight, there’s no way the Hulk [would lose].
