Ubisoft’s goal with Assassin’s Creed Mirage is to make you feel like you’re playing an evolved version of one of the older games in the series, and it’s laid out the tenets of its approach in a new behind-the-scenes video, embedded above. The presentation is light on gameplay – we’ll see a lot more of that during next week’s Ubisoft Forward – but it delves deeply into parkour, stealth, and assassinations, all of which have been influenced by the original games rather than the more recent entries.
For example, crowd blending is back and an important infiltration mechanic, so you’ll be able to move among strangers in order to navigate the packed streets of Baghdad undetected. Should you get discovered, the parkour will focus more on the speed and agility of the Ezio-era, with more densely populated streets allowing you to quickly move from the ground to the roofs of buildings. Some new mechanics, like poles, will enable you to get about even faster than ever before.
And it’s really important to underline that Ubisoft isn’t standing still here. There are some new enemy archetypes, like spear-wielders, for instance, who will poke and prod hay stacks searching for your presence. Another enemy type will shoot down your eagle, preventing you from scouting out your surroundings from the sky.
But if you really want that classic feel, one awesome addition in the new game is the inclusion of a desaturated, blue/grey graphics filter which will enable Mirage to match the nostalgic colour palette and art style of the original release. Obviously, you won’t have to use this if you don’t want to, but it’s a neat nod to Altair’s iconic PS3 outing, and we appreciate Ubisoft’s really tried to capture the spirit of the classics to the degree
