Apple has reportedly threatened to take action against staff who aren’t coming into the office at least three days a week.
Platformer’s managing editor Zoë Schiffer tweeted Wednesda(Opens in a new window)y that the company was to “give employees escalating warnings if they don’t come in 3x per week.” Schiffer added that Apple workers’ attendance was being tracked via badge records.
It was also reported that some organizations within the company said that failure to comply could result in contract termination, though it “doesn’t appear to be a company-wide policy.”
In August, Apple announced it would make it a requirement for corporate employees to work three days a week from Sep. 5. The rule means workers are required to go into the office on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and on a third regular day selected by team leaders.
At the time of the policy announcement, a group of employees, called “Apple Together(Opens in a new window)” launched a petition signed by over 1,200 people asking that Apple allows employees to figure out their working arrangements with their managers.
The toughened stance on remote working comes as Apple seeks to cut costs across the company while still avoiding the mass layoffs seen at other Silicon Valley giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Google. As Bloomberg reports(Opens in a new window), one of the cost-cutting measures has included removing “special sick time” for time staff missed due to Covid.
Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment on the attendance tracking and termination threats.
