Apple is putting ChatGPT on a tight leash when it comes to the iOS App Store. The company has blocked an iOS app from integrating the chatbot technology over concerns it’ll churn out age-inappropriate content to younger users.
Email client BlueMail wants to add a ChatGPT-powered feature to its iOS app to help users automate their message writing. However, Apple rejected the feature during a review last week, according(Opens in a new window) to The Wall Street Journal.
“Your app includes AI-generated content but does not appear to include content filtering at this time,” the company reportedly told BlueMail.
The email provider has currently set the age restriction for its iOS app to four years and older, meaning the product contains no objectionable material. But to add the ChatGPT-powered feature, Apple advised BlueMail to set the age restriction to age 17 and higher, potentially undermining the product's reach.
The dispute suggests Apple has some concerns about content moderation for AI-powered chatbots. With a simple text prompt, programs such as ChatGPT can churn out professional-looking essays, email messages, and social media posts on a wide variety of topics, potentially revolutionizing how users write text. But experts also fear the same technologies could make mistakes or be abused to spread propaganda and fringe ideologies.
However, BlueMail co-founder Ben Volach has taken to Twitter to claim(Opens in a new window) that “Apple is unfairly targeting” the email client over the ChatGPT integration.
