Tom Nook has always been a mainstay of the Animal Crossing series and has been a subject of many fan theories over the years. One of the strangest theories is whether he's actually a human wearing a Tom Nook suit. The Animal Crossing series first began in 2001 with a release on the Gamecube, and since then has become one of the most popular simulation game series to date. Throughout all releases, Tom Nook is one of the first characters players will encounter, and one they will likely see every time they play as his character is embedded into several different in-game mechanics.
Tom Nook's character may look like a typical raccoon, but he is actually a tanuki, also known as a Japanese raccoon dog. Alongside fellow younger tanukis Timmy and Tommy, Tom Nook has a hand in each installment's town store. He also presides over real estate dealings, managing players' mortgages and upgrading their homes for them. Although many view Nook as a villain, he is a hero in many ways, particularly when it comes to charitable acts — he donates 90% of his earnings to an orphanage, and although he introduces them in New Horizons as his nephews, it's rumored Nook adopted an orphaned Timmy and Tommy. He has long-standing relationships with other Animal Crossing NPCs that are revealed through in-game conversations throughout the series. For example, he used to do business with shady fox Redd until an "incident" drove them apart, and he grew up in the same town as hedgehog tailor Sable where the two were close childhood friends.
