After surpassing its predecessor at the box office, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is racing home as Paramount announces its streaming and Blu-ray release dates. Based on SEGA's hit video game franchise, the 2022 movie sequel picks up eight months after the events of its predecessor as Sonic anxiously tries to show his worth as a hero on Earth, despite constant errors made in his efforts. When Tom and Maddie head to Hawaii for her sister's wedding, Sonic finds himself once again pitted against the villainous Dr. Robotnik as he returns to Earth with the help of Knuckles the Echidna in their joined search to find the Master Emerald.
Ben Schwartz returned to lead the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as the titular hero alongside Jim Carrey as Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Lee Madjoub. The film also marked the franchise debuts of Shemar Moore, Idris Elba as Knuckles and the proper introduction of Colleen O'Shaughnessey's Miles «Tails» Prower after a brief appearance in the first film's post-credits scene. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hit the big screen in April to better reviews than its predecessor from critics and audiences alike and now those eager to revisit the video game sequel are getting their chance.
