Many people turned to it as a place of solace during the height of the lockdown and were able to use it as a way to meet with their friends virtually. There were a lot of ways players could keep busy in-game, like redecorating their homes, completely redoing their islands, and investing in the Turnip Stock Market. The game gives a lot of options for players to choose from, but a relative lack of post-launch support led to a decline in interest. However, with the latest DLC that was released in November 2021, players were given even more to do in the way of redecorating homes. The DLC Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise gave players opportunities to create elaborate mansions and iconic movie sets.

Reddit user dreaming_of_utopia shared their most recent build for Knox, the chicken villager that dresses in a medieval knight costume. They decided to build a stronghold fit for the chivalrous chicken. Knox's new home is complete with turrets surrounding a plaza in the middle that has a few faux homes, clothes on a clothesline, suits of armor guarding the front door, and a covered wagon with a cooking pot next to it.
