2024 is almost here, and the one thing that will be prevalent throughout the year is the use of on-device AI. The support has already been built into a number of chipsets that have been released for the next year, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Dimensity 9300, and the Exynos 2400. Now, a new report has come forward talking about how smartphones with on-device AI will need significantly more RAM than before.
The report in question suggests how eight gigs of RAM is still a standard in the modern-day Android smartphone market. Sure, we have seen phones with more RAM than most laptops or computers, but that has not become a standard.
Macquarie has issued a report on the required RAM capacity to run on-device AI on smartphones, and it's intriguing.

As you can see in the image above, for on-device AI image generation to work flawlessly, Android phones will need at least 12 gigs of RAM, which is still something that we do see. My phone has 12 gigs of RAM, too. It gets more interesting because devices with on-device AI assistants, along with other features, are going to need upwards of 20 gigs of RAM to ensure smoother operations.
We have seen phones with 20+ gigs of RAM in the past. As a matter of fact, OnePlus recently released a device, but at that time, on-device AI wasn't the focal point. However, with this report, there is a chance that next year's smartphones will come with higher RAM capacity if we expect the AI features to work how they are supposed to.
