Amazon Prime Video announces the leading men for its upcoming rom-com, Red, White, and Royal Blue. The new movie is based on an eponymous LGBTQ romance novel that author Casey McQuiston wrote in 2019, drawing inspiration from the HBO comedy series Veep and Carl Bernstein's Hillary Clinton biography A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton. McQuiston's book proved to be a runaway hit, with critics heralding its rich, thoughtful characterization as well as its uniquely millennial humor. Not long after the book's release, Red, White, and Royal Blue became an inspiration for media projects, with the Swedish Netflix original Young Royals gaining particular attention for its similarity to the novel's plot points.
Although Young Royals only came out in 2021, Amazon Studios had already acquired the rights to the McQuiston's book in 2019, enlisting Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti's Berlanti Productions to adapt the novel into a feature-length film. Later, in October 2021, renowned playwright and screenwriter Matthew Lopez was brought on board to helm the movie in his directorial debut. News on the film has since been scant, although now Red, White, and Royal Blue is finally making some headway.
