All-female Final Fantasy 16 musical announced
A Final Fantasy 16 musical has been announced.
The show will be performed by the all-female theatre troupe Takarazuka Revue. Tickets for the show will go on sale in April, the performance will take place in late 2024.
The show will take place at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in Hyogo, Japan. A Final Fantasy X-themed Kabuki show was performed earlier this year.
Square Enix has also claimed as part of the announcement that the Final Fantasy series has crossed 180 million “shipments and downloads” worldwide.
In recent years, Square has collaborated with various orchestras to perform live renditions of the soundtracks of several Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy 16 shipped and digitally sold 3 million copies in less than a week of availability, according to publisher Square Enix.
The figure means FF16 is roughly in line with Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s launch, which managed around 3.5 million copies in ten days.
It does also mean, however, that its predecessor Final Fantasy 15 remains the fastest-selling entry in the series with 5 million units shipped and sold digitally back in November 2016. This was across multiple platforms, whereas Final Fantasy 16 is a PS5 exclusive.
VGC’s Final Fantasy 16 review calls the action RPG “an incredible action game with blockbuster visuals and music,” but suggests “there’s a very real sense that it’s missing some of the series’ RPG identity at its core”.
“To play this as a straightforward action game with little deviation is to have an amazing experience,” we wrote, “but if at any time you feel inclined to stop and smell the roses of Valisthea, you may be found wanting.”
