The After Ever Happy trailer follows up on young lovers Tessa and Hardin after an explosive cliffhanger ending. The project is the fourth and final film adaptation of the After novels by Anna Todd, which were published in 2014. The novels originated as fanfiction on the social writing platform Wattpad, with the male romantic lead inspired by musician Harry Styles (at the time the solo artist was still a member of the massively popular UK boy band One Direction). The first book, After, was adapted to film in 2019 with Hero Fiennes Tiffin (the nephew of Ralph Fiennes) playing the tortured but handsome Hardin Scott and Josephine Langford (the sister of 13 Reasons Why'sCatherine Langford) playing Tessa, the fresh-faced college student who falls deeply in love with him.
Tessa and Hardin's turbulent affair continued into the 2020 sequel After We Collided, which also introduced a love triangle with Dylan Sprouse as Tessa's new coworker Trevor. The 2021 follow-up After We Fell was riddled with production issues, including COVID restrictions forcing the production to recast nearly every character except the two leads after changing the location from Georgia to Bulgaria. However, their show-must-go-on mentality shone through and the series continued as planned, with the fourth and final film being shot in the same stretch. The increasingly complicated storyline of After We Fell ended on a major cliffhanger as Hardin learned that his real father is his mother's friend Vance and stormed off, leaving Tessa to find him and comfort him.
