An impressive fan drawing shows Link and his friends set sail in a scene inspired by The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The 2002 installment of Nintendo’s long-running RPG franchise represented a major departure from the Zelda games before it, trading the grounded fantasy art style of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for a more colorful, cel-shaded aesthetic and trading Zelda’s traditional Kingdom of Hyrule setting for a vast ocean known as the Great Sea — which Link needed to sail across to rescue his sister from the evil sorcerer Ganondorf and save the world.
Although this drastic shift in The Legend Of Zelda’s established formula initially divided fans when the game launched on the Nintendo GameCube, Wind Waker would later be regarded as one of the most unique entries in the Legend of Zelda series. It spawned a handful of portable sequels, and the Toon version of Link later became a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series from 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl onward. The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker was also re-released on the Nintendo Wii U as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, and fans are still hopeful that this remastered version will be ported onto the Switch one day, as many industry insiders have hinted at.
