The size and scale of Assassin's Creed has increased with each new title — to a fault, some players would argue — but that may be set to change with the rumored Assassin's Creed Rift, a Valhalla spinoff set to focus on Basim in Baghdad. Despite Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla bringing their own respective improvements to the franchise, searching every nook and cranny for random collectibles or completing side activities to earn enough points to upgrade the protagonist takes away from the main story and makes Assassin's Creed much too tedious. The new Assassin's Creed game is rumored to be much smaller, and this could be a great change for the series.
The new game, which reportedly started out as DLC before becoming a full release, will focus on Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Basim as the main protagonist. Assassin's Creed Rift will ostensibly be a much smaller game that focuses more on stealth than the last few titles. These changes bring Assassin's Creed back to its origins, and it will hopefully give players a more focused story with fewer collectibles and side activities to distract them.

Although reducing the scale of the playable area in the new title may seem like a step backward, the change should allow the story to shine through. Some of the best Assassin's Creed stories were in earlier games, like the titles included in The Ezio Collection, and the games still felt complete without an oversized map to explore. The smaller size should help with creating an interesting story that isn't constantly interrupted by a massive amount of secondary content, and restore some of the old formula to the series last seen in Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
