The soon-to-be-created Nintendo film studios can replicate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but unlike Marvel Studios, they can build a crossover franchise that doesn't rely as much on permanent interconnectivity as a conventional Nintendo Cinematic Universe would. Cinematic universes are a powerful tool for film studios, as each release builds excitement for the next, thus accumulating long-term success. However, studios have to be careful not to overwhelm their audience, given that a rushed expansion can quickly put future crossover plans in jeopardy.
Nintendo's acquisition of the visual production company Dynamo Pictures is a good sign for future adaptations of popular video game titles. After the release of the upcoming Mario movie, Nintendo could adapt different Nintendo franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and StarFox. Then, they can go one step further and build an MCU-inspired franchise where every established character meets each other in a crossover movie, just like in the Super Smash Bros. video games — the Nintendo equivalent to Marvel's The Avengers. With the crossover elements built in via Nintendo's own games, the future of a potential big screen franchise is certainly promising.
