As new details surface of his tenuous relationship with Warner Bros., Zack Snyder is addressing Godzilla vs. Kong review-bombing accusations. Snyder helped usher the DC Extended Universe into existence, having been at the helm for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before infamously being shuffled off during Justice League's production amidst creative differences and the loss of his daughter. Though briefly reuniting with WB for the 4-hour alternate cut of the latter film dubbed Zack Snyder's Justice League, Snyder has mostly cut ties with the studio as he has moved on to working with Netflix for the Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon franchises.
Godzilla vs. Kong served as the ultimate culmination of Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise, finally bringing the titular titans together after the former got two solo movies and the latter was introduced in 2017's Kong: Skull Island. Helmed by Adam Wingard, the film proved to be a critical and commercial hit upon its early 2021 release, scoring strong reviews for its visual effects and action sequences and grossing over $470 million against its $330 million break-even point. While already having to face a COVID release and simultaneous HBO Max release, Godzilla vs. Kong also had one other hurdle to overcome in its road to success.
