Nintendo has warned that the Switch should only be used in temperatures up to 35°C, which could be a problem this weekend.
It’s not just the UK that is suffering from unusually high temperatures at the moment, with Spain already reaching heights of 43°C. That’s a problem for all sorts of reasons, including the fact that your Nintendo Switch isn’t supposed to be used outside of a 5°C to 35°C temperature range.
As a hybrid portable console, the Switch can theoretically be used anywhere – there’s a big thing at the moment about fans playing Cuphead while hiking, although that’s mostly using a laptop – but the console isn’t magic and because of high temperatures in Japan, Nintendo has issued a warning not to use it in the heat.
The Japanese city of Isesaki recently recorded a record high of 40.2°C, with temperatures regularly getting over 35°C in Tokyo. This has been repeated around the world and while the current warning is only in Japanese it says to be particularly careful about not blocking the console’s vents.
What exactly will happen to the Switch in a worst scenario is not specified, but clearly the intention is that you don’t find out.
‘Please ensure good ventilation around the air intake and exhaust vents,’ reads a translation of the message. ‘If the air intake exhaust vents are blocked, the temperature of the device may increase.’
Temperatures in the UK are expected to exceed 35°C on Sunday and Monday, and be well above 32°C for much of England and Wales.
There should hopefully be some respite after that, so if you want to play video games outside it may be best to wait for some more clement weather.
