Spotting cavities before they cause you any pain requires a well-trained and thorough dentist, or at least, it did. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just approved a new AI-powered cavity detection system that can act as a very reliable second opinion for dentists.
FDA 510(k) clearance was granted for VideaHealth's Videa Caries Assist AI-powered dental cavity detection algorithm. According to VideaHealth, the number of cavities dentists fail to spot was reduced by 43% when they used the AI system, and erroneous detections were also reduced by 15% during the FDA trial. It didn't matter how experienced the dentist was, adding AI improved detection rates.
The detection system works by reviewing x-rays of teeth and relying on a dataset of over 100 million data points, known as the Videa Factory, collected from dental service organizations (DSOs), insurance companies, clearinghouses, and universities.
That data is turned into "extremely accurate models," which the AI uses to learn to recognize dental conditions, therefore allowing it to make accurate diagnoses. The end result is a very quick second opinion for dentists, and early and therefore hopefully less painful/invasive treatment for patients.
VideaHealth says its AI solution is compatible with most dental practice management software and image systems in use today, and only takes a few minutes to install. Now it has FDA approval, the system should start appearing at dental practices across the US soon.
