Master Yoda was forced to flee from Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith — but Star Wars tie-ins have revealed he had a secret rematch with the Emperor during the original trilogy. The Grandmaster of the Jedi Order, Yoda was considered their wisest member. For all that's the case, though, even he was outmaneuvered by the Sith. No doubt Palpatine enjoyed the thrill of operating in Yoda's presence, undiscovered, adding an extra element to their rivalry.
Palpatine finally stepped out of the shadows in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, allowing the Jedi to learn he was a Sith Lord. That led to a confrontation with Yoda in the Senate itself. It was an ironic setting, because for so many years the Jedi had looked down on politics, failing to understand its importance even as they became unwittingly enmeshed in it. The battle didn't go well for Yoda, who was forced to flee when he realized the dark side was too strong for him to defeat.

The latest Star Wars anthology, Stories of Jedi & Sith, reveals that was not the last encounter between Palpatine and Yoda. It contains a short story by Tessa Gratton, Masters, set during the events of Return of the Jedi as Palpatine prepared his trap at the Second Death Star. According to this story, Palpatine sensed Master Yoda's death on Dagobah and initially rejoiced — only to realize something strange has happened. "It is as if Yoda has not existed at all to the Emperor, and suddenly he is all around. Everywhere in the Force."
