Yellowstone star Luke Grimes has detailed the cowboy boot camp that writer, director, and showrunner Taylor Sheridan puts the cast through before each season. Grimes stars as Kayce Dutton in the western drama about John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the patriarch of a family who owns the largest ranch in Montana. With the Yellowstone Ranch threatened by outside forces, and his family torn apart from the inside, John struggles to maintain ownership of the property while struggling to keep his family together. Yellowstone season 1 finds Kaycee already separated from his father, living on the neighboring Native American reservation with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and young son Tate (Brecken Merrill).
The cowboy-themed series depicts the daily life and hardships of living and working on a large cattle ranch. The ranch hands must herd cattle, break horses, mend fences, and rope strays, all while riding on the back of the horse. Throughout Yellowstone's four seasons, various aspects of the cowboy culture are on display, including rodeo events such as saddle bronc riding, team roping, and barrel racing. The cast of the show must be able to convincingly perform these tasks as if they were second nature to them while continuing to effectively play their roles.
